M5.6 Earthquake (Oaxaca) Triggers Seismic Alert Across CDMX
At 09:19 local time, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck 14 km northwest of Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, triggering the seismic alert system (Sistema de Alerta Sísmica Mexicano, SASMEX) across Mexico City and surrounding municipalities. Orderly evacuations took place at offices, schools, and commercial buildings throughout the capital. No fatalities, serious injuries, or significant structural damage were reported in CDMX. The alert reflects ongoing seismic activity along Mexico's Pacific subduction zone — the same tectonic setting responsible for the catastrophic 1985 and 2017 earthquakes. The event came two days before the scheduled National Earthquake Drill on May 6.
