Police Commander Sokol Resigns Amid Audio-Leak Corruption Probe; Álvarez Takes Over

General Mirko Sokol resigned as Commander General of the Bolivian Police after nine months in the post, amid a prosecutorial investigation into a leaked audio in which he allegedly referenced a roughly $2 million collection among senior officers to manipulate promotions and the police command succession. Sokol had built his tenure around a "zero tolerance" anti-corruption pledge and the March capture of Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. President Paz swore in Colonel Adrián Javier Álvarez Arismendi, previously head of the Police's national technology directorate and former El Alto police chief, as interim Commander General the same day at the Palacio Quemado, alongside Roger Roca Saavedra as interim sub-commander and Franz Williams Cabrera Quispe as interim inspector general.
