US Utility-Scale Battery Storage Nears 52 GW, Growing ~70% Annually
US Energy Information Administration data reported August 25, 2026 shows utility-scale battery storage capacity reaching nearly 52 GW as of June 2026, up from 43.6 GW at the end of 2025 — an addition of 8.3 GW in the first half of the year alone. EIA figures show the fleet has grown at roughly 70% annually over the past three years, driven largely by solar-plus-storage projects that shift daytime solar generation to evening peak demand. Developers report plans to add a further 54 GW of battery storage capacity by 2028, which would push total US capacity above 105 GW by the end of the decade.
