Australia's Grid Battery Pipeline Reaches 67.3 GW — 62% Annual Surge

AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) data published April 23 showed the National Electricity Market (NEM) battery storage pipeline grew 62% year-on-year to a battery-specific 33.2 GW within an overall 67.3 GW interconnection queue — up 33% from 50.5 GW a year prior. Battery projects now represent 49% of total NEM pipeline capacity, with 74% of battery projects specifying grid-forming inverters, enabling them to independently stabilize grid frequency without synchronous generation. The pipeline nearly matches Australia's total existing ~73 GW installed grid capacity, underlining how rapidly utility-scale storage has displaced new fossil-fuel generation proposals in the country's energy planning horizon.
