Government Announces 'Historical Truth'

Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam presents the 'historical truth' (verdad histórica): students were captured by Guerreros Unidos cartel members based on a mistaken order, killed, and incinerated at the Cocula garbage dump over 15 hours. Ashes were dumped in the San Juan River. This version implicated local police and cartel but exonerated federal and military authorities. It was later comprehensively debunked.
