Study: AstroRad Vest Tested on Artemis I Could Cut Deep-Space Radiation Exposure Up to 60%

A Science Advances study led by StemRad's Jordan Houri found the AstroRad radiation-shielding vest, flown unoccupied on Artemis I mannequins Helga and Zohar in 2022, could cut an astronaut's radiation dose by ~60% in a 1972-scale solar storm and ~40% in a 1989-scale event. The 26 kg vest was not carried on the crewed Artemis II flyby due to mass and space constraints but is being considered for longer lunar and Mars-bound crews.
