NASA Completes LEMS Seismometer Payload for Artemis Astronaut Deployment at Lunar South Pole
NASA declared "wrenches down" on the Lunar Environment Monitoring Station (LEMS), the first fully completed science payload designed for Artemis astronauts to deploy on the Moon's surface. Built at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, the suitcase-sized, 11-pound (in lunar gravity) instrument suite contains two highly sensitive seismometers for continuous, autonomous long-term monitoring of moonquakes and meteorite impacts near the lunar South Pole. LEMS generates its own power via flexible solar arrays, survives the two-week lunar night and temperatures down to -400°F using advanced insulation rather than radioisotope heaters, and transmits data to Earth monthly. The payload will remain in a clean room at Goddard until NASA assigns it to a specific Artemis surface mission. "Our vision was to create a scientific buoy for the Moon," said LEMS project lead Mehdi Benna.
