Chamber of Deputies Passes Judicial Reform 359–135

| AMLO (2018–2024)

Due to protests blocking the legislative palace, the Chamber of Deputies relocated its vote to a gymnasium and in the early hours of September 4 passed the judicial reform 359 in favor and 135 against — comfortably clearing the two-thirds supermajority threshold. All major opposition parties voted against. The reform made Mexico the first country in the world to directly elect all members of its judiciary by popular vote. More than 6,500 judges, magistrates, and justices would be elected in June 2025 elections; the Supreme Court was reduced from 11 to 9 seats.
