Bonn Agreement Signed
Afghan factions sign the Bonn Agreement in Germany, establishing a framework for transitional governance in Afghanistan. The agreement created a 30-member Afghan Interim Authority with Hamid Karzai as chairman, replacing the Taliban government. It also called for the creation of a loya jirga (grand assembly) and elections within two years.
