Taliban Abandons Kabul

Taliban forces withdraw from Kabul overnight as Northern Alliance forces enter the Afghan capital. The fall of Kabul signals the effective end of Taliban rule over most of Afghanistan within barely five weeks of the start of the US-led campaign. Taliban fighters retreated south toward Kandahar and into Pakistan.
