Hamid Karzai Sworn In as Interim Leader

Hamid Karzai is sworn in as head of the Afghan Interim Authority in Kabul. Karzai, a Pashtun tribal chief and former anti-Soviet mujahideen fighter, becomes Afghanistan's first post-Taliban leader. He is backed by the US, UN, and regional powers. ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) is established in Kabul to provide security.
