Operation Enduring Freedom Begins

US and British forces launch air strikes against Taliban and al-Qaeda targets in Afghanistan, beginning Operation Enduring Freedom. President George W. Bush announced the strikes were in response to the September 11 attacks and Taliban refusal to surrender Osama bin Laden. Initial strikes targeted Taliban air defenses, military command centers, and al-Qaeda training camps.
