Hitler Dies by Suicide in Berlin Bunker
With Soviet forces fighting street-to-street battles less than a kilometer away, Adolf Hitler shot himself in the head in his underground bunker (Führerbunker) in Berlin; Eva Braun, whom he had married hours earlier, took cyanide. Their bodies were burned in the Reich Chancellery garden per Hitler's instructions. Grand Admiral Dönitz was named Hitler's successor.
