Operation Uranus — Soviet Counteroffensive Encircles German 6th Army
Soviet forces launched Operation Uranus, a massive pincer attack north and south of Stalingrad that encircled the German 6th Army (330,000 men) within days. Hitler refused to allow Paulus to break out. A relief operation (Operation Winter Storm) failed. The encircled army slowly starved and froze through the winter of 1942–43.
