Battle of Stalingrad — War's Bloodiest Battle Begins

| World War II

Germany's 6th Army under General Paulus launched an all-out assault on Stalingrad on the Volga River, where fighting devolved into brutal street combat for every building. Soviet forces under General Chuikov defended the city in savage close-quarters battles. The battle lasted six months and became the bloodiest single engagement in human history.
