Fall of Singapore — Britain's Greatest Military Defeat

| World War II

Japanese forces under General Yamashita captured Singapore after a 70-day campaign down the Malay Peninsula, forcing 85,000 British, Australian, and Indian troops to surrender — Britain's greatest military disaster. Churchill called it 'the worst disaster and largest capitulation in British history.' Singapore's capture gave Japan control of Southeast Asia.
