Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact Signed

| World War II

Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union signed the Molotov–Ribbentrop Non-Aggression Pact in Moscow. The public treaty pledged non-aggression, but a secret protocol divided Eastern Europe into Nazi and Soviet spheres of influence, setting the stage for the partition of Poland. The pact shocked the world and cleared Hitler's eastern flank for the invasion of Poland.
