Meuse-Argonne Offensive — America's Largest Battle
The American Expeditionary Forces launched the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the largest military operation in American history involving 1.2 million soldiers. American forces broke through the German Hindenburg Line, targeting the critical Sedan-Mézières railway that supplied German armies. The offensive lasted 47 days until the Armistice. Sergeant Alvin York's one-man capture of 132 German prisoners became the iconic story of American heroism. The AEF suffered 122,000 casualties.
