Zimmermann Telegram Intercepted
German Foreign Secretary Arthur Zimmermann sent an encoded telegram to the German ambassador in Mexico, proposing a military alliance against the United States: Mexico would attack the US in exchange for help recovering Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. British Naval Intelligence decrypted the telegram and revealed it to the US on February 24. Its publication on March 1 outraged American public opinion and accelerated US entry into the war.
