Italy Declares War on Austria-Hungary
Italy, which had been a member of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary, declared war on Austria-Hungary, lured by the secret Treaty of London promising territorial gains including Trentino, Istria, and part of Dalmatia. Italy notably did not declare war on Germany until August 1916. The Italian front along the Isonzo River became the scene of eleven bloody battles over the next two years as Italian forces repeatedly failed to break through.
