Ottoman Empire Begins Armenian Genocide
The Ottoman government arrested and executed several hundred Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople, beginning a systematic campaign of deportation and mass killing that killed an estimated 600,000–1.5 million Armenians. The Ottomans used wartime conditions and military necessity as justifications. Turkey continues to dispute the genocide label, while most historians and over 30 national governments officially recognize it as genocide.
