First Zeppelin Raid on Britain
Two German Zeppelin airships crossed the North Sea and dropped bombs on Great Yarmouth and King's Lynn, killing four civilians. This was the first aerial bombing of civilian targets in British history. Germany conducted 51 Zeppelin raids on Britain during the war, killing 557 people and injuring 1,358. The raids caused widespread panic but minimal military damage. As RFC and RNAS night fighters improved, Zeppelin losses mounted and Germany increasingly used Gotha bombers instead.
