Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot dead in Sarajevo, Bosnia, by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb nationalist affiliated with the Black Hand secret society. The assassination triggered a diplomatic crisis that cascaded into world war within six weeks. Princip fired two shots from point-blank range after the Archduke's motorcade took a wrong turn near Schiller's Delicatessen.
