Esquipulas II: Central American Leaders Make Peace Over US Objections
Five Central American presidents signed the Esquipulas II Peace Accords on August 7, 1987, providing a framework for ending regional conflicts including the Contra war. Costa Rican President Oscar Arias won the 1987 Nobel Peace Prize for brokering the deal. The Reagan administration opposed the accords and continued supporting the Contras. The accords eventually led to the 1990 Nicaraguan elections.
