Reform UK Wins 13 Councils and 1,350+ Seats — Displaces Conservatives as Dominant Right
Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, recorded an unprecedented breakthrough in the 7 May 2026 local elections, winning more than 1,350 council seats and control of 13 councils across England — predominantly in coastal towns, post-industrial areas of the Midlands and North, and rural England. Farage declared the results a 'historic shift in British politics', effectively displacing the Conservatives as the dominant right-wing force in local government. The Conservatives themselves suffered further losses but were outperformed by Reform in many of their former heartlands, triggering a renewed debate within the party about whether to maintain a distinct electoral lane from Reform or attempt some form of realignment.
