Rare Daytime Russian Drone Barrage Kills 2, Injures 43+ in Kyiv; Historic Shayba Market Burns

Russia carried out a rare daytime drone attack on Kyiv on September 23, lasting from roughly 6:00 a.m. into early afternoon and using faster, high-flying jet-powered Shahed-type drones that are harder to intercept. Kyiv residents endured eight air raid alerts from midnight onward. The attack killed 2 people and injured more than 43, set fire to the historic Soviet-era 'Shayba' railway market, and struck the Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, and Solomianskyi districts, damaging railway infrastructure near Kyiv Central Station (the station itself was confirmed undamaged) and residential buildings. Russia hit one of Ukrnafta's petrol stations in the capital — the sixth such facility attacked in recent weeks — and injured a railway worker in a separate strike on rail infrastructure. Zelensky said 'Russia continues to turn civilian and critical infrastructure into targets: pharmaceutical facilities, gas stations, railways, communications infrastructure, and shopping malls,' while Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said 'there are no prerequisites for moving onto a peaceful negotiating track.' The attack came hours after Zelensky's UN General Assembly talks with Trump on an energy ceasefire.
