Zelensky Visits Sweden: 16 Gripen C/D Jets Donated + 20 Gripen E/F Purchase Deal Signed (€2.5 Billion)

| Ukraine

On May 28, 2026, President Zelensky traveled to Stockholm for talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. Sweden announced it will donate 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D multi-role fighter jets from its active air force fleet, along with advanced ammunition, with deliveries expected to begin in early 2027. Ukraine also agreed to purchase up to 20 next-generation Gripen E/F fighters using €2.5 billion (~$2.9 billion) from an EU support loan, with delivery expected before 2030. The deal makes Sweden one of the most significant contributors of air power to Ukraine's defense. Zelensky also promoted Ukraine's drone warfare expertise as an export capability. Sweden joined NATO in March 2024 and has been one of the top Western military aid providers per capita. The Gripen jets will supplement Ukraine's F-16 fleet (donated by Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway) and significantly expand Ukrainian air force capacity.
