Ukraine ~600-Drone Strike Hits Angstrem Semiconductor Plant in Zelenograd — Moscow Air Defenses Overwhelmed; 200+ Flights Disrupted

| Ukraine War

On the night of May 17–18, 2026, Ukraine launched one of the largest drone attacks of the entire war — approximately 600 drones using domestically-developed RS-1, FP-1, and BARS-SM models, flying over 500 km inside Russian territory. More than 120 drones targeted the Moscow capital region. Key confirmed targets include the Angstrem Semiconductor Plant in Zelenograd, which produces microelectronics for Russian weapons systems, as well as the Kapotnya oil refinery (Moscow's largest), oil pumping stations around the capital, and the Solnechnogorsk oil pumping station. Russia reported intercepting over 1,000 drones within 24 hours across all directions. Sheremetyevo International Airport had over 200 flights delayed or cancelled due to the strikes, and dozens of additional flights were diverted. Total casualties from all Ukrainian strikes: 4 killed (3 in Moscow region, 1 woman in Belgorod region killed in her home), 17 injured. Military analysts noted the strikes expose Russia's air defense vulnerabilities at home: 'Ukraine may not be breaking Russia at the front, but it is increasingly able to expose Russia's vulnerability at home' (Newsweek). Ukraine characterized the strikes as targeting 'Russia's military industry and oil infrastructure,' calling them 'entirely justified' in retaliation for Russia's May 14 attack on Kyiv that killed 24 people.
