Trump Promises $5,000 'Dividend' Checks to Every American Adult if Republicans Keep Congress
Closing out the RNC's first-ever midterm convention at Dallas's American Airlines Center on Thursday, September 10, 2026, President Trump pledged that every American adult citizen would receive a $5,000 check — which he dubbed the 'Trump dividend' — if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in November. 'If the Republicans win, you win with us and you get $5,000,' Trump told the crowd, offering no detail on funding mechanics, though Vice President Vance had indicated tariff revenue would partly cover the cost. With roughly 245 million US adult citizens, the payout would total an estimated $1.2 trillion. Tax Foundation economist Erica York said the checks would 'spend almost all the revenue that the new tariffs are projected to bring in over a decade,' and former IMF chief economist Kenneth Rogoff warned it would 'blow up' an already unsustainable deficit; election-law scholar Rick Hasen said Trump likely has First Amendment latitude to make the campaign promise (citing Brown v. Hartlage) but actual payments would require congressional approval. Similar Trump pledges in 2025 — a tariff dividend and a DOGE dividend — never materialized. In the same speech Trump also vowed to make his tax cuts permanent, pursue 'most-favored-nation' prescription drug pricing, redirect health-insurer payments directly to citizens, and told the crowd 'you go to hell' if they don't vote in November.
