Díaz Ordaz Dies — Takes Responsibility to Grave
President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz dies on July 15, 1979. In his final years, he publicly defended the 1968 crackdown, stating he took 'full moral and political responsibility' for the decision to use force, though he consistently denied that hundreds had died. He died without facing any legal accountability. His brief 1977 appointment as Mexico's first ambassador to Spain was rescinded after protests.
