Explosion and Fire at Tainan Waste Site Injures 13

An explosion and fire broke out at approximately 1:12 a.m. on August 22, 2026 at a vacant lot used to store discarded industrial materials on Haidian Road in Tainan's Annan District, southern Taiwan. Preliminary investigation identified aluminum-magnesium alloy and waste oil at the site as contributing factors; the cause remains under investigation. Thirteen people — three firefighters and ten residents — sustained minor injuries (mostly abrasions and burns) and were discharged after treatment; no deaths were reported. The blaze spread to 8-11 neighboring homes and damaged roughly 20 vehicles, including fire trucks, an ambulance and rescue vehicles; dozens of nearby residents were evacuated. Authorities dispatched 53 fire trucks and 144 firefighters, using foam and water cannons to contain the fire. Post-incident air quality monitoring showed no abnormalities.
