Kurdish Administration Completes Integration Into Syrian State Institutions
SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced from Qamishli on August 21, 2026 that the integration of northeast Syria's Kurdish-led civil, security, and administrative institutions into Syrian state structures was complete, with tens of thousands of former SDF/AANES personnel now formally employed by Syrian government ministries. The milestone builds on the January 2026 Damascus-SDF integration agreement (mediated by the US and France, endorsed by Turkey) and January decrees from President Ahmad al-Sharaa recognizing Kurdish citizenship, language rights, and Nowruz as a national holiday. Analysts cautioned that Kurdish rights remain absent from the draft constitution and that integration of women's military units (YPJ) still faces resistance.
