Syria Reports ~120,000 Voluntary Returns from Lebanon in First Four Months of 2026
Syrian border authorities reported approximately 120,000 Syrian refugees voluntarily returned from Lebanon during the first four months of 2026 (January–April). This wave is part of a larger voluntary return trend: UNHCR estimates over 1.3 million Syrians have returned to the country since the December 2024 regime collapse, primarily from Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan. UNHCR projects up to one million additional voluntary returns in 2026. The returns from Lebanon accelerated after the November 2024 ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, which reduced pressure in Lebanon and enabled Syrians to consider return. However, UNHCR maintains that general conditions for safe and voluntary return are not yet met throughout all of Syria, particularly in areas with ongoing instability, limited housing, or disputed property rights. The May 15 UN Security Council briefing underscored that 15.6 million Syrians still need humanitarian assistance, meaning returning refugees face significant economic hardship including high food prices, limited employment, and damaged infrastructure.
