ISIS Claims Assassination of Shia Cleric at Sayyida Zainab Shrine
The Islamic State detonated a sticky bomb attached to the vehicle of Sheikh Farhan Hassan Mansour, a member of the Shia scholarly body and Friday sermon preacher at the Sayyida Zeinab shrine south of Damascus. Sheikh Mansour was killed in the attack. ISIS formally claimed responsibility, marking one of the more prominent terrorist operations in the Syrian capital since the transitional government took power in December 2024. Iran condemned the attack, calling it a 'terrorist crime against the holy shrine and Muslim scholars.' The incident raised concerns about ISIS's continued capacity for high-profile targeted assassinations in Damascus.
