G7 and EU Urge Both Sides to Avoid New Atrocities Over El Obeid

G7 foreign ministers and the EU's Kaja Kallas issued a joint statement on July 15, 2026 urging both SAF and RSF to 'cease hostilities and actions that could lead to atrocities' over El Obeid, calling for the UN Security Council to expand the Darfur arms embargo to cover all of Sudan and urging foreign powers to cut military and financial support to both sides. The statement confirmed El Obeid remained under 'partial RSF siege' as of mid-July. The same day, ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan briefed the UN Security Council on Darfur under the Council's Resolution 1593 mandate, reinforcing the El Geneina and El Fasher findings and warning of recurring atrocity patterns emerging in El Obeid, based on 130+ victim interviews: 'We cannot say we did not know... it is for this council and all states to act now, to prevent further atrocities.' The RSF has not responded to ICC cooperation requests. TASIS separately demanded an independent chemical-weapons probe the same day.
