Sudan PM Kamil Idris Inspects Port Sudan Airport, Issues Infrastructure Directives
Sudan Prime Minister Kamil Idris conducted a formal inspection of Port Sudan International Airport on June 2, 2026, reviewing the facility's current infrastructure and operational capacity. During the visit, the Prime Minister issued executive directives to airport authorities to accelerate development and improve operational efficiency. Port Sudan airport has served as Sudan's primary functioning international aviation hub since the war effectively destroyed Khartoum International Airport's commercial operations in April 2023. The inspection comes as Qatar Airways announced it will launch a 3x-weekly Doha–Port Sudan route starting July 2, 2026, signaling gradual reconnection of Port Sudan to international aviation networks. PM Idris's focus on airport infrastructure reflects the SAF government's priority of normalizing Port Sudan as Sudan's de facto administrative and commercial capital. Port Sudan hosts the internationally recognized SAF government, UN agencies, diplomatic missions, and the Central Bank of Sudan's residual operations. Khartoum International Airport resumed limited commercial flights in late April 2026 (with Badr Airlines, Sudanair, and Tarco), but was again targeted by RSF drone strikes on May 4–5 and required closure for four days. Port Sudan's Red Sea port and airport remain the most secure entry points for humanitarian aid and official government operations.
