Measles Outbreak Kills 70, Infects 1,000 in Labado Displacement Area, East Darfur Since March 2026

| Sudan Conflict

A measles outbreak in the Labado displacement area of East Darfur has killed approximately 70 people and infected around 1,000 others since March 2026, human rights groups reported on April 28. Labado hosts large numbers of internally displaced persons from across Darfur who fled the RSF's ethnic violence campaign since 2023. The outbreak is consistent with collapsed healthcare infrastructure across Darfur — RSF occupation has destroyed or rendered non-functional over 40% of Sudan's health facilities, and the WHO documented that 65% of Darfur's population has been deprived of basic medical services. Vaccination campaigns have been impossible in most RSF-controlled Darfur areas due to active conflict, access denial, and targeted attacks on healthcare workers. The Labado outbreak adds to a constellation of disease crises sweeping Sudan's displacement camps: cholera, malaria, and acute watery diarrhea outbreaks have been documented at multiple IDP sites since 2023. UNICEF has warned that Sudan's children face overlapping threats of starvation, disease, and violence — 6 million children are displaced and 4.9 million children under 5 are acutely malnourished. WHO's Sudan Country Office has limited access to RSF-controlled Darfur, making verified outbreak figures extremely difficult to obtain.
