Pentagon Announces Defense Fuel Support Point in Davao Region to Sustain South China Sea Operations
The US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) confirmed on April 10, 2026, that the Pentagon is planning a Defense Fuel Support Point (DFSP) at Malalag Bay in Davao del Sur, Mindanao — the first US military fuel storage facility in the southern Philippines. The Davao DFSP is envisioned to store up to 41 million gallons of fuel products, with approximately half dedicated to naval distillate grade F-76 for surface ships and the remainder aviation-grade JP-5 fuel for aircraft. The facility is strategically located at the southeastern edge of Mindanao, providing logistical depth for US forces operating across the Sulu Sea and South China Sea approaches to the Philippines. Once activated (2028–2031), the Davao DFSP will enable US naval vessels to receive fuel at an alternative point away from the South China Sea-facing ports of Subic Bay and Manila, which could be exposed in a potential conflict with China. Philippine military officials welcomed the announcement, saying the facility would strengthen humanitarian assistance, disaster response, and West Philippine Sea maritime security operations. The facility will remain under Philippine government ownership under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) framework.
