Philippines Activates New Coast Guard District HQ at Pagasa Island, Calls It 'Steadfast Sentinel of Sovereignty'
The Philippines unveiled and activated a new major coast guard installation — the Coast Guard District Kalayaan Island Group — at Pagasa Island (Thitu Island) in the Spratly Islands on April 9, 2026. Philippine authorities described the facility as a 'steadfast sentinel of our sovereignty' in the contested South China Sea. The new command marks a significant upgrade in the Philippines' permanent institutional maritime presence on Pagasa Island, the country's largest occupied Spratly feature, which hosts a small civilian population, Rancudo Airfield, and Naval Station Emilio Liwanag. The activation followed months of construction and comes approximately two weeks before Balikatan 2026 begins. China's coast guard vessels were reported patrolling nearby waters and issuing radio warnings to Philippine aircraft at the time of the announcement. The establishment of a dedicated district-level coast guard command on the island is intended to enable faster response to Chinese maritime militia and CCG incursions in the surrounding waters of the Kalayaan Island Group.
