China Accelerates Antelope Reef Construction as US Carriers Diverted to Middle East, SCS Recon Flights Drop 30%
Asia Times reported on April 4, 2026, that China was accelerating construction at Antelope Reef (Lingyang Jiao) in the Paracel Islands during a window in which two US carrier strike groups — the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS George Washington — had both been redeployed to the Middle East as of March 30, leaving the USS Theodore Roosevelt as the sole US carrier in the Pacific. Analysis indicated US reconnaissance flights over the South China Sea dropped approximately 30% in February 2026 compared to December 2025–January 2026 levels (72 vs. 102 flights per month), reportedly tied to US diplomatic signaling aimed at setting conditions for a Trump-Xi summit. CSIS Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative satellite analysis (published March 19) had confirmed Antelope Reef reclamation reached approximately 1,490 acres — rivaling Mischief Reef's 1,504 acres — with over 50 grey-roofed structures, a helipad, large jetties, and foundations possibly supporting a 9,000-foot runway along the northwestern edge. The construction, which began in October 2025, represents the first major Chinese artificial island construction since 2017 and the first in the Paracel Islands at this scale. Vietnam filed a formal diplomatic protest on March 23; the Philippines noted the construction with concern as Balikatan 2026 preparations continued.
