China Formally Warns Philippines Over EO 111 Renaming of 131 Kalayaan Island Group Features

| SE Asia Escalation

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning issued a formal warning on April 2, 2026, stating Beijing 'firmly opposes' Philippines' Executive Order No. 111 and would take 'necessary measures to firmly defend its territorial sovereignty' over the renamed features. China's Global Times called the move 'illegal' and a violation of sovereignty over what Beijing calls 'Nansha Qundao.' The Philippine National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) was simultaneously tasked by the Presidential Communications Office with updating all official Philippine charts to reflect the 131 newly mandated Filipino names. China's protest — the first formal government-level response to EO 111 — escalated the diplomatic confrontation that began when Marcos signed the order on March 26 and made it public on March 31. The Philippines' Department of Education, CHED, and TESDA were concurrently directed to integrate the Philippine-designated names into school curricula. The naming order covered features including those occupied by China, Vietnam, and Malaysia, with China occupying 8 of the 131 features — including Mischief Reef, within the Philippines' EEZ.
