Philippines Arrests Three Defense Personnel on Chinese Espionage Charges
Philippine authorities announced the arrest of three Filipino nationals affiliated with the Department of National Defense, the Philippine Navy, and the Philippine Coast Guard on charges of espionage for China. The suspects allegedly passed sensitive operational information — including logistics for South China Sea resupply missions — to Chinese intelligence handlers via covert digital channels. One suspect used a messaging app concealed inside the video game Tetris on a modified mobile phone. The AFP and PCG stated all three confessed and are cooperating with authorities. China's embassy denied involvement, denouncing what it called 'irresponsible spy narratives.' The case prompted calls to modernize the Philippines' 1941-era espionage laws.
