Somali Journalist Bashir Mohamed Abdullahi Dies From Gunshot Wounds Sustained Covering Baidoa Clashes

Bashir Mohamed Abdullahi, 23, a reporter for Arlaadi Media Network, died in the early hours of September 7, 2026 from gunshot wounds sustained on September 3 while covering fighting between federal forces and Laftagareen-aligned militia in Baidoa's Al Axmaar district. Armed men in uniform with covered faces stopped him, questioned him about his employer, and shot him twice in the back after he identified himself as a journalist. He underwent emergency surgery at Bay General Hospital but died before he could be transferred to Mogadishu for further treatment. The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and the International Federation of Journalists demanded a full investigation and accountability, calling it the second journalist killed in Somalia in 2026 and warning that chronic impunity for attacks on the press must end.
