Egyptian FM Warns Against 'Unilateral Measures' Threatening Somali Sovereignty, Presses for Egyptian Sailors' Release
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met Somali counterpart Abdisalam Abdi Ali on the sidelines of the 166th Arab League Council ministerial session in Cairo on September 7, 2026, praising the 'significant development' in bilateral ties while warning against 'unilateral measures that could compromise or diminish' Somalia's sovereignty and reaffirming Egypt's support for its unity and territorial integrity. Abdelatty also raised Egypt's participation in AUSSOM and pressed Somali authorities to expedite the release of Egyptian sailors currently detained off Somalia's coast, calling for continued Somali government involvement in securing captives' freedom. The two ministers also discussed deepening economic, development and investment cooperation.
