AFRICOM Strike #62 Targets ISIS-Somalia Cave Network ~75km SE of Bosaso — 2026 Air Campaign Unprecedented in Scale

| Somalia

US Africa Command issued Press Release #36451 on May 4, 2026, confirming the 62nd US airstrike in Somalia in 2026 — targeting an ISIS-Somalia affiliate position approximately 46 miles (74 km) southeast of Bosaso in Puntland's Bari Region. The strike targeted ISIS-Somalia operatives in the Golis/Cal Miskaad mountain range, where the militant group maintains cave-based infrastructure for planning and logistics. The operation was conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia. The 2026 air campaign has reached an unprecedented pace: 62 confirmed strikes by May 4, compared to the previous all-time annual record of 63 strikes in all of 2019. Annualized, the 2026 rate exceeds 200 strikes per year — more than triple the prior record. AFRICOM no longer publishes casualty assessments or civilian harm reports for Somalia strikes. The anti-war monitoring group Antiwar.com noted the strike was the 62nd of the year. The ISIS-Somalia Puntland affiliate, operating separately from Al-Shabaab, poses a secondary but growing threat from its mountain sanctuary; AFRICOM has conducted multiple strikes targeting the group's Golis/Cal Miskaad positions in 2026 (PR #36380 on April 17, April 25, April 26, and now May 4).
