Al-Shabaab Seizes Adan Yabal; President Mohamud Orders Immediate SNA Offensive to Retake Town

Al-Shabaab seized the strategic town of Adan Yabal (Aadan Yabaal) in Hiiraan Region in heavy clashes with Somali National Army forces around April 19, 2026. In response, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud convened an emergency meeting at Villa Somalia with SNA Commander General Yusuf Odowaa Rage and senior military officers, ordering them to immediately launch new operations to reclaim Adan Yabal and other recently captured areas. Al-Shabaab fighters also reportedly killed 8 civilians including 5 women in the Adan Yabaal area — targeting business owners at a restaurant, military facility support operation, laundry facility, and garage. The fall of Adan Yabal is a significant setback in Hiiraan Region, the same area where the 2022 Macawisley-SNA offensive had made major gains. The seizure underscores Al-Shabaab's ability to exploit the governance vacuum created by Somalia's constitutional crisis: parliament's mandate expired April 14 without elections, and President Mohamud's own term expires May 15.
