Joint AUSSOM–SNA Gorgor Operation Captures Senior Al-Shabaab Battalion Commander at Mubarak

| Somalia

A joint operation by Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) AUSSOM troops and the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) — specifically elite elements of the 203rd Unit of the 20th Brigade of the Gorgor Commandos — captured a senior Al-Shabaab battalion commander at the north-western outskirts of Mubarak, Lower Shabelle, on April 3, 2026. The suspect, identified as Salaad Cusmaan Macalin (alias 'Sahm'), aged 40, is described as an influential operational leader involved in planning and executing militant attacks in Mogadishu and surrounding areas. He joined Al-Shabaab in 2009. He was apprehended while scouting defensive positions in preparation for an attack, accompanied by a group of fighters including 17 foreign militants recently deployed from Al-Shabaab's command centre in Jilib, Middle Juba region. One associate identified as 'Salman' evaded capture during the operation. Initial interrogation revealed that another associate — 'Ismaaciil,' a Kenyan national — had volunteered for a suicide mission as part of a planned attack in the area. The operation is part of Operation Rolling Thunder / Bader continuing efforts in Lower Shabelle and demonstrates deepening joint AUSSOM–SNA counter-insurgency capacity at Mubarak, a town recently recaptured from Al-Shabaab.
