Day 771: Gunmen Shoot Mazatlán Civil Protection Coordinator Óscar Osuna Tirado in Official Vehicle

Armed men riding a red motorcycle opened fire on the official municipal vehicle of Óscar Roberto Osuna Tirado, Mazatlán's Civil Protection Coordinator, on the morning of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, on Avenida Gutiérrez Nájera near its intersection with Emilio Barragán in the Montuosa sector of downtown Mazatlán, close to the municipal water authority (JUMAPAM) offices. Witnesses reported roughly a dozen to fifteen gunshots. Osuna Tirado and a companion traveling with him were both wounded and received medical attention; both were reported in stable condition. The Sinaloa Secretaría de Seguridad Pública confirmed the attack via social media and deployed municipal police, Army and Navy elements to search for the attackers; no arrests had been announced as of publication. The attack occurred despite a heavy military footprint in Mazatlán — over 6,000 troops stationed in the city as part of "Operación Sable" — underscoring the persistence of Chapitos–Mayos violence in the port city even against civil-protection officials rather than rival gunmen.
