Cartel Gunmen Ambush 4 Municipal Police in Escuinapa — Subdirector Among Dead

A cartel hit squad ambushed municipal police officers on the Mazatlán–Tepic highway near the Tecualilla community in Escuinapa municipality at approximately 10:30 AM on March 31, 2026. Four officers were killed, including Esteban Gutiérrez Mazariegos, the operational subdirector of the Escuinapa police command. One officer was critically injured. The attack is consistent with cartel efforts to neutralize local law enforcement in Escuinapa, a southern Sinaloa municipality that serves as a gateway to Nayarit and is contested by cartel factions. The attack occurred three days after the launch of joint SEDENA/SEMAR/State Police Semana Santa security operations, demonstrating that cartel forces are undeterred by the holiday security surge.
