UNITAS LXVII opens in Peru: 24-nation naval exercise days after Peru's coalition accession

The 67th edition of UNITAS — the world's longest-running multinational naval exercise — opened at Peru's Callao Naval Base on 10 September, days after President Keiko Fujimori announced Peru's Shield of the Americas participation during Secretary Rubio's Lima visit. More than 5,300 personnel from 24 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa are participating with 26 surface ships, three submarines, 21 aircraft and at least six unmanned systems, in maritime, amphibious, riverine, cyber-defense and — for the first time — lake operations on Lake Titicaca. The exercise runs through 24 September, spanning Callao, Ancón, Salinas, Junín and Iquitos, and coincides with Peru's bicentennial year.
